Security Best Practices for File Sharing
Essential security guidelines to protect your data during file transfers
Password Protection
Protect your AeroShare account and file transfers with strong, unique passwords. Use a mix of uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters (avoiding common words, personal information, or sequential patterns).
- Use at least 12 characters
- Avoid using personal information (birthdays, names)
- Use different passwords for different accounts
- Never share passwords via email or messaging
- Consider using a password manager
Important: AeroShare uses end-to-end encryption. Even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access transferred files without the encryption keys.
Verify Recipient Identity
Always verify that you are sending files to the intended recipient. Double-check peer IDs before initiating transfers. If sharing peer IDs via communication channels, confirm the recipient's identity through another verified channel.
Secure Your Internet Connection
When transferring files, use a secure, private internet connection. Avoid public Wi-Fi networks (coffee shops, airports, libraries) where your data could be intercepted. Use a password-protected home network or mobile data connection when possible.
Keep Software Updated
Regularly update your browser, operating system, and security software. Enable automatic updates for AeroShare (if available as a PWA) and your operating system. Keep your antivirus software active and running real-time scans.
Use Two-Factor Authentication
If you add two-factor authentication (2FA) to your account, provide an additional layer of security. Even if an attacker obtains your password, they cannot access your account without the second verification factor.
Don't Reuse Peer IDs
AeroShare peer IDs are temporary and session-based. Do not reuse peer IDs from previous transfers or share them publicly. Each new transfer generates a unique, secure ID.
What to Avoid
Security Risks
- Never share files via public links with untrusted recipients
- Avoid using AeroShare for illegal or unauthorized content
- Do not transfer files to unknown email addresses
- Be suspicious of unexpected transfer requests, even if they appear to come from trusted contacts
- Report security vulnerabilities to AeroShare immediately
AeroShare Security Features
- End-to-End Encryption: All transfers are encrypted using military-grade AES-256. Files never stored on servers or accessible to third parties.
- Zero-Knowledge Architecture: AeroShare cannot access, view, or decrypt your files. Encryption keys are generated and managed entirely on your device.
- Session-Based Peer IDs: Unique IDs are generated for each transfer session and automatically destroyed after completion.
- Real-Time Progress Tracking: See transfer speed, percentage complete, and time remaining throughout entire transfer process.
- Secure Connection: Direct device-to-device P2P connections established over encrypted WebRTC channels.
